Outdoor Living for Palo Alto Eichlers

Patio with a concrete fire table and orange stools under a mid-century overhang, Palo Alto

Eichler homes were built around the garden: glass walls, open plans, a direct line from the living room to the yard. The landscape should follow the house.

Notes for an Eichler garden

  • Align paving with the glass walls
  • Concrete, stone and wood that age well
  • Fire, dining and lounge areas as extensions of the rooms inside
  • Planting that needs little summer water
