Drought Planting on the Peninsula

The Peninsula has a Mediterranean climate: mild, wet winters and long, dry summers. Gardens that suit it look calm in August and need little water once established.

What the state asks

California's Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance applies to new landscapes of 500 square feet or more, and to rehabilitated landscapes of 2,500 square feet or more, when the work needs a permit, plan check or design review. It sets a water budget and favors climate-appropriate plants, mulch and efficient irrigation.

How we plant

Layered grasses, gravel and a few strong trees. Plants grouped by water need, drip irrigation, and lawn only where it is used.
